Earlier, the cardinals had closed the doors of the Sistine Chapel, signaling the start of a secret papal conclave where 133 cardinals met to vote on a new leader. This was the largest and most diverse gathering ever held, with cardinals from more than 70 countries attending, many of whom had never met before and were only getting to know each other in the earlier period. While this is the first time that the majority of cardinals are not from Europe as in the past, there has been a significant increase in the number of cardinals from Asia and Africa, following the appointments of Pope Francis.
